Anne and James purchased the property (which is located between Hudson and Hyde vineyards in the southern part of Carneros) in 1999. The vineyard is situated on an uplifted knoll with well-draining gravelly soils, and was planted to James and Anne’s specifications to five selections of Pinot Noir: 777, Swan, Calera, 828 and 115. With more than a decade of vine age, the vineyard has begun consistently producing grapes that produce lovely layers of red fruit and blackberry notes, as well as darker more savory elements.

Tasting Notes: This is a plush and supple expression of Pinot Noir, with lovely volume and weight that lingers on the palate. The aromas showcase Chambord, black cherry and plum, as well as layers of mulling spice, cola, cocoa and dark espresso bean. These elements are echoed in the flavors, alongside dark fruit and cinnamon stick notes, and oak-inspired hints of maple syrup. The tannins are smooth and velvety, and the wine’s medium acidity offers a cleansing note to the lengthy finish.

Winemaking:
100% Pinot Noir
Multi-yeast fermentations (wild & cultured)
15% whole clusters
100% malo-lactic fermentation in barrel
50% new Burgundian French oak barrels
Bottled without fining or filtration

Visit Salon Society Exclusives to see additional products in this category.

The inspiration for this wine came from a special auction created in 2007, where we sat down with Lee and Larry to blend a cuvée using our favorite barrels from their two properties. We were so pleased with the results that we decided to do it again in 2009—a spectacular vintage that eloquently expressed the vineyard character of each site. The final blend brings together the richness and density of Lee’s Hudson-Wente Chardonnay, with the ethereal aromatics and lifted floral character of Larry’s Hyde-Wente grapes. In homage to the bigger-than-life nature of these legendary growers, we aged this one-of-a-kind wine in 100% new oak.
Tasting Notes: At this early stage in the development of this age-worthy wine, the dramatic, richly textured character of the Hudson Vineyard fruit is taking center stage, with smoky layers of caramelized sugar, peach and spiced pear supported by more nuanced notes of Hyde-inspired citrus and minerality that should evolve (and underscore this wine’s complexity) with time.
Winemaking:
100% Chardonnay fruit
Whole cluster pressed
100% indigenous yeast fermentations (wild)
Sur lie aged with weekly stirring
100% malo-lactic fermentation in barrel
100% new Burgundian French oak barrels
Bottled without filtration

Visit Salon Society Exclusives to see additional products in this category.

It is an extremely cool vineyard (and the last one we pick), ranging in elevation from 320 to 820 feet. Our fruit comes from two distinct blocks that we control the viticulture of under long-term contract—one at the very top of the property, and another in the middle. The soils are Goulding-Toomes, the vines are very closely spaced, and the Pinot Noir clones are 828 and 667. A relatively newer clone, 828 is something special, producing a hyper-red fruit expression of Pinot Noir with elements of raspberry and cherry. This single-vineyard bottling features the most head-turning lots from the vintage.

Winemaking:
100% Pinot Noir; Multi-yeast fermentations (wild & cultured); 100% malo-lactic fermentation in barrel; 60% new Burgundian French oak barrels; Bottled without fining or filtration

Cases produced: 124

THE PATZ & HALL FAMILY OF WINEGROWERS
William Hill – Gap’s Crown Vineyard – Sonoma Coast

Gap’s Crown Vineyard is owned by longtime viticultural icon William Hill, who has developed over 40 high-end vineyards in his long career. He was also the founder of Napa’s William Hill Winery and Oregon’s Van Duzer Winery. As you would expect from this pedigree, Gap’s Crown is a meticulously cared-for vineyard. Just as important, it offers a remarkably unique expression of intense Sonoma Coast fruit. Though we only began working with this vineyard in 2007, it is already emerging as a cornerstone for our Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.

Visit Salon Society Exclusives to see additional products in this category.
