Vineyard Character: Located about two miles west of Sebastopol on Pleasant Hill Rd. (in an area known as Sebastopol Hills), the 18-acre Jenkins Ranch is situated on gently rolling hills at an elevation of approximately 400 feet. Once an apple orchard, Jenkins Ranch features Goldridge series gravelly loam soils planted to Dijon selections 667, 115 and 777. These vines were planted under the guidance of renowned vineyard manager Charlie Chenoweth in 2001, and consistently produce extraordinarily small yields. Though the site features cool coastal influences, its location one series of hills back from the Petaluma Gap offer a degree of shelter and warmth.

Tasting Notes: The aromatics for this wine are both inviting and complex with layers of spice, fresh cherry, raspberry, dried cranberry and lavender, as well as notes of clove, cocoa, ginger, a cedar humidor and damp earth. On the palate, the wine shows its cool vineyard roots with initial flavors that are energetic and bright. The tannins, which are sweet, coating and supple, lead to a dense powerful mid-palate filled with red-fruited Pinot flavors that carry through to a long finish. Excellent tension and vibrancy make this wine both structured and cellar-worthy.

Perched on a sandy mesa above the fertile ground of the valley, Pisoni Vineyard is the benchmark for superlative Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands. Reflecting a perfect convergence of aspect, site and soil, Pisoni consistently yields grapes with remarkable power and complexity, highlighted by pure raspberry and cherry flavors.

Tasting Notes: This is a beautiful expression of Pisoni Vineyard—with remarkable richness and density, supple, fine-grained tannins and an elegant layered quality. The aromas showcase Chambord, strawberries, fresh cream, cinnamon, clove and chocolate, with a hint of smoky oak and enticing elements of perfume and spice. As compelling as it is now, it’s hard to fathom how good it could become.

Vineyard Character: This beautiful wine features fruit from an array of exceptional Sonoma Coast winegrowing sites, including vineyards in Green Valley, Sonoma Valley and the Russian River Valley. Some of the appellation’s most distinguished viticulturists and vineyard owners provide fruit for this complex blend, including the Dutton Brothers, the Martinelli family, Charlie Chenoweth, and Steve Hill.

Tasting Notes: The cooler 2010 growing season has produced a classic expression of Pinot Noir with beautiful layers of cherry, raspberry, cedar, clove and cinnamon, as well as more floral notes of rose and carnation. Though the tannins are creamy, rich and fine-grained, there is a bright acidity that penetrates the tannins and keeps the wine light and lively. While the wine’s energy and high-tone red-fruit notes are a constant from start to finish, deeper notes of chocolate, moist earth and forest floor offer balance and add complexity. A great wine that’s reminiscent of the exceptional 2007 vintage.

The blend also features a core of fruit from Gap’s Crown, one of the Sonoma Coast’s great emerging vineyards. In addition, to achieve our goal of producing a Pinot Noir that embodies the depth, structure and vibrant fruit flavors of the Sonoma Coast, we continually seek out new single-vineyard caliber Pinot Noir sites to add to this delicious cuvée.

Vineyard Character: Like several of our finest vineyards, Chenoweth Ranch was originally cultivated as an apple orchard. Planted on the far western edge of the Russian River Valley appellation, this beautiful 7-acre vineyard is located in Green Valley, one of the region’s coolest areas, and is farmed exclusively for Patz & Hall. Though enjoying excellent sunlight from it slight south-facing orientation, the vineyard is sheltered by steep western hills, which protect the grapes from late-afternoon baking, while helping the fruit to retain natural acidity. This meticulously cared-for vineyard consistently produces strawberry and Bing cherry flavors.

Tasting Notes: The 2009 vintage produced one of our darkest and most extracted expressions of Chenoweth Ranch Pinot Noir to date. While signature notes of strawberry and cherry are still on display, there is a depth and density to this wine that hints at its exceptional ageability, with mouthcoating layers of dark chocolate, smoke and cedar complemented by lovely elements of violet and lavender.

Increasingly well known as one of California’s preeminent vineyard managers, Charlie Chenoweth has developed this small Pinot Noir vineyard on a knoll above his family’s homestead estate. Planted to five expressive Dijon clones in loamy Goldridge soil, we designated this site as a single-vineyard bottling in 2004. Charlie Chenoweth has also been able to bring us some superlative Pinot Noir fruit over the years for our Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir blend from his Sonoma County vineyard development projects.

Vineyard Character: This vineyard often exhibits classic Carneros flavors of strawberries and raspberries mingled with mocha, espresso and cinnamon. Our HYDE VINEYARD - Carneros Pinot Noir consists of a veritable who’s who of the finest Pinot clones. Though this wine focuses on a core of Hyde-Calera grapes, it also includes Dijon 777, 667, 115, Pommard and Bebe clone fruit. As a result, it is at once delicate and fascinatingly intricate, while at the same time being dense, deeply colored and extracted.

Tasting Notes: This wine is both extremely rich and super supple, with fine-grained, mouthfilling tannins, balanced oak and an intriguing dusty quality. The aromas are alluring and sophisticated, offering layers of raspberry, cranberry, blueberry, sassafras, milk chocolate, cinnamon, clove and cassis. A classic expression of Hyde vineyard—powerful, elegant and intricate.

Through many years of dedicated research, planting and winemaking, Larry Hyde has developed two of the most important grape selections in California: Hyde-Wente Chardonnay and Hyde-Calera Pinot Noir. Our HYDE VINEYARD - Carneros Pinot Noir comes from three small blocks within the larger Hyde Vineyard: two are planted with the famous Hyde-Calera selection, along with some Dijon, Pommard and Bebe clones, and the third is a plot of 26-year-old Swan clone.

Vineyard Character: This vineyard historically expresses classic Pinot Noir aromas and flavors of blueberry, baking spices, cassis and cocoa. The site is situated just west of Sebastopol on an east-facing ridgetop exposed to cool marine air from the Pacific. Impeccably farmed by the Martinelli family, the site’s Dijon clone 115 vines are planted on very well-drained Goldridge sandy loam soils. Year after year, Burnside is an extraordinarily low-yielding site producing very small, intensely flavored berries.

Tasting Notes: This is one of the most energetic and aromatic Pinot Noirs we have ever produced from Burnside Vineyard. While it still has the vineyard’s signature notes of cocoa, as well as cardamom and clove baking spice, there are also vibrant notes of raspberry and cherry that create a beautiful contrast between dark and light elements. The flavors, which surround a core of crisp acidity and earthy minerality, are pure and intense without being overly extracted, and the oak is seamlessly integrated.

Lee Martinelli – Burnside Vineyard – Sonoma Coast

We have been delighted to work with Lee Martinelli for many years in other vineyards, so when he developed the Burnside Vineyard in 2002 and offered us a small amount of fruit, we jumped at it. Red Goldridge series soils mark Burnside Vineyard as a superb Pinot Noir site with a hillside orientation bending to the east for early morning sun exposure. Burnside Vineyard is planted entirely to the excellent Dijon clone 115, which has proven successful in several of California’s top Pinot Noir vineyards.
