Our history with this vineyard goes back many years to when it was known as Carr Vineyard. In fact, Carr Vineyard was the source for our very first single-vineyard Chardonnay in 1994. Since then, the vineyard has changed hands a couple of times, most recently in 2007. As a result, we are sad to say that our 2006 WALL ROAD VINEYARD – Mount Veeder Chardonnay will be our last bottling from this special site.
Vineyard Character: A cool, northeast-facing vineyard in a relatively warm appellation, Wall Road is located very close to the top of a ridge at an elevation of approximately 1,200 feet. As a result, coastal winds are funneled over the ridge and through the vineyard. The steep, terraced site features unusual rhyolitic volcanic ash soils. These sandy, well-drained soils are very similar to Goldridge series sandy loam. Planted in 1993, the vineyard features Dijon selection 76 and 96 vines that produce dense, unctuously textured Chardonnay, notable for its rich butterscotch and concentrated tropical fruit elements.
Winemaking: 100% Chardonnay fruit; Whole cluster pressed; Multi-yeast fermentations (wild & cultured); Sur lie aged with weekly stirring; 100% malo-lactic fermentation in barrel; 40% new Burgundian French oak barrels; Bottled without filtration
