Vineyard Character:
Gap’s Crown is located on the western hillside of Sonoma Mountain, where it benefits from cool ocean breezes drawn through the Petaluma Gap. It is an extremely cool vineyard (and the last one we pick), ranging in elevation from 320 to 820 feet. Our fruit comes from two distinct blocks that we control the viticulture of under long-term contract—one at the very top of the property, and another in the middle. The soils are Goulding-Toomes, the vines are very closely spaced, and the Pinot Noir clones are 828 and 667. A relatively newer clone, 828 is something special, producing a hyper-red fruit expression of Pinot Noir with elements of raspberry and cherry. This single-vineyard bottling features the most head-turning lots from the vintage.
Winemaking:
100% Pinot Noir; Multi-yeast fermentations (wild & cultured); 100% malo-lactic fermentation in barrel; 60% new Burgundian French oak barrels; Bottled without fining or filtration
Cases produced: 124
THE PATZ & HALL FAMILY OF WINEGROWERS
William Hill – Gap’s Crown Vineyard – Sonoma Coast
Gap’s Crown Vineyard is owned by longtime viticultural icon William Hill, who has developed over 40 high-end vineyards in his long career. He was also the founder of Napa’s William Hill Winery and Oregon’s Van Duzer Winery. As you would expect from this pedigree, Gap’s Crown is a meticulously cared-for vineyard. Just as important, it offers a remarkably unique expression of intense Sonoma Coast fruit. Though we only began working with this vineyard in 2007, it is already emerging as a cornerstone for our Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.
